With this activity, you will learn how to sketch and shade a realistic chipmunk using graphite pencils in various degrees. You&#8217;ll practice layering, crosshatching, and adding depth to create fur texture and contrast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>STAEDTLER\u00ae Mars Lumograph pencils &#8211; assortment of hard and soft degrees<\/li>\n<li>STAEDTLER\u00ae Mars plastic eraser<\/li>\n<li>STAEDTLER\u00ae metal pencil sharpener<\/li>\n<li>Drawing paper<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Instructions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, gently sketch your chipmunk with a 2H degree of hardness pencil. Do not add too many details. This should be an outline and general shapes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/StepOneChipmunk400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19209\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using a softer pencil (hardness grade B), gradually work the head out with dashed crosshatching. Always keep the direction of the light in mind and shade accordingly from shadow to light.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/StepTwoChipmunk400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19211\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using a 2B grade pencil, work out the darker areas of the chipmunk\u2019s fur, i.e., the stripes on the back and tail, and the shadows, so that the pattern gradually gains depth.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/StepThreeChipmunk400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19210\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With hardness grade 4B, you now deepen the dark areas of your drawing, such as eyes or the shadow on the belly and feet. You can now work out the landscape around it and the wood structure of the tree trunk a bit further.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/StepFourChipmunk400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19208\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, use the softest pencil (hardness 6B) to create the landscape, soil structure, tree bark, and all deep shadows.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/StepFiveChipmunk400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19207\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro tip: <\/strong>A piece of paper placed under your drawing hand will protect the areas that have already been worked out from smearing while you finish the rest of the drawing.
