The 1st and 2nd causes were &#8220;stress related to finishing school\/homework&#8221; and &#8220;grades\/test results&#8221;, respectively.\u00a0<\/span>Additionally, students are scared about the world and their future. The same EdWeek Research Center study found 37% of teens feel anxious about climate change, and a third of them felt afraid for the future, citing a feeling of &#8220;impending doom&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Signs to Look Out For<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you notice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/childrens-health\/in-depth\/mental-illness-in-children\/art-20046577\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">any of these signs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in a student, it may be time to intervene.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Persistent sadness that lasts two weeks or more<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Withdrawing from or avoiding social interactions<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hurting oneself or talking about hurting oneself<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talking about death or suicide<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outbursts or extreme irritability<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Out-of-control behavior that can be harmful<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Drastic changes in mood, behavior, or personality<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Changes in eating habits<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Loss of weight<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Frequent headaches or stomachaches<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Changes in academic performance<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Avoiding or missing school<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keep in mind that female, LGBTQ+, and\/or students who experience racism have an increased risk of mental health issues.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How Teachers Can Help<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to learning about\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/resilienteducator.com\/classroom-resources\/trauma-informed-teaching-tips\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">strategies used in\u202ftrauma-informed instruction<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, teachers\u202fcan take these steps to help students adjust to the new school year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Have consistent rules and routines.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fThis year it may take anxious or distracted students longer to learn school rules and routines than you would expect. Taking extra time at the start of the school year to help students internalize rules will help things go more smoothly for the rest of the year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teach age-appropriate coping skills.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fAsk the school counselor to visit your class and teach simple ways that kids can help themselves calm down. You might want to introduce a classroom cool-down corner that students can visit when they feel they are about to lose control or incorporate lessons on social and emotional learning into the curriculum.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Communicate with parents.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fIt\u2019s always been important to keep an eye on how students are doing and to talk with a student\u2019s parents if a child is struggling academically, socially, or emotionally. Let parents know if their child\u2019s behavior changes significantly or they seem disengaged from class. Be aware of the types of services your school counselor provides and be able to explain to parents the process for referring their child to the counselor.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Teachers of Young Students Should Know<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>39.2% of children between ages 6 and 16 have experienced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenssociety.org.uk\/what-we-do\/our-work\/well-being\/mental-health-statistics\">deterioration of mental health<\/a> in recent years, and 50% of mental health problems developing before age 14.\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">With 1 in 6 children between ages 2 and 8 having a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akleg.gov\/basis\/get_documents.asp?session=33&amp;docid=45272\">according to the CDC<\/a>, teachers play a vital role in noticing the signs of a struggling student and ensuring families are made aware to get them the help they need.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How Early Education Teachers Can Help<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inviting students to meet their teacher and classmates in an outdoor event on the school playground, if it\u2019s safe to do so in your area<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Frequently communicating with parents about how their children are doing; and<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a predictable routine and structure to the school day.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Teachers of Middle and High School Students Should Know<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With their greater needs for social interaction with peers, many students in middle school and high school struggled with loneliness while learning remotely. Some students reported worrying more about their school performance. Many found themselves spending most of their waking hours online, between school and personal internet use, feeling isolated even if family members were home with them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How Middle and High School Teachers Can Help<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Teachers at the middle school and high school levels can help support their students by watching for changes in behavior and\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/mental-health\/index.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">signs of anxiety and depression<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fand understanding their school\u2019s process for referrals to the school counselor.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition, teachers can help students by\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/protective\/youth-connectedness-important-protective-factor-for-health-well-being.htm\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">fostering a sense of belonging and connection<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fat school.
