Follow these tips to avoid social media faux pas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/0921-teacher-etiquette-social-media-fullsize.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"236\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12652\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">You might be an amazing teacher who both students and colleagues admire, but inappropriate social media behavior has the power to damage your reputation almost instantly. E<span class=\"s1\">verything you post online, from shared links to pictures and memes is a direct reflection on you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Below are some cardinal rules educators must know before using social media both in and out of the classroom.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">1.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>Get to know your school\u2019s, county\u2019s, and state\u2019s social media guidelines for employees.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you are unsure where to find this information, ask a superior to direct you. There may already be rules set in place by your district regarding what employees can and cannot post on social media.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">2.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>Under no circumstance should you ever \u201cfriend\u201d or \u201cfollow\u201d your students on your personal social media accounts. If they request to follow you, always decline. This rule goes for students of all ages.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">3.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>If you have a public Twitter, TikTok, or Instagram account, you may have to block any students who start following you. Keep on top of this and regularly check your new followers. You can verbally let your students know that it is <i>not <\/i>okay for them to be following you on social media until after they graduate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">4.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>Don\u2019t use any photos that you wouldn\u2019t want your boss to see as your profile picture. This means no tiny bikini photos, no pictures from your partying days, and nothing that shows usage of alcohol or drugs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">5.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>Be aware of your privacy settings. Even when you restrict viewing capabilities from certain people, many times they are still accessible to people outside your inner circle. Many social media apps also change their settings quite frequently, so make sure your profile is up to date on the latest privacy settings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">6.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>Never post a photo of your students to your personal social media account. It is not your place to post photos of other people\u2019s children online, even if the student says it\u2019s okay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\">7.<span class=\"Apple-tab-span\"> <\/span><\/span>There are hilarious videos on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@schoolfamilymedia?lang=en\">TikTok<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherlists.com\/blog\/7-middle-school-teachers-to-follow-on-instagram\/\">Instagram<\/a> about how grueling teaching a bunch of 6-year-old\u2019s can be \u2013 and for the most part they are harmless and entertaining \u2013 but there is a fine line between being funny and offensive.
