From sharing art and fashion inspiration to connecting with friends across the globe, the platform offers countless opportunities for self-expression.<\/p>\n<p>Data shows that roughly 61% of teens ages 13-17 use Instagram\u2014with 50% saying they use it daily, and about 12% saying they use it &#8220;almost constantly.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/fact-sheet\/teens-and-social-media-fact-sheet\">Pew Research Center, July 10, 2025<\/a>). There&#8217;s no doubt that teens are flocking to this social platform, but like any digital space, it comes with its own set of challenges\u2014including its contribution to self-esteem issues, addictive scrolling, and exposure to harmful content.<\/p>\n<p>After facing public criticism and parental concerns about Instagram&#8217;s impact on youth mental health, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, launched Instagram &#8220;teen accounts&#8221; in 2024. These accounts aimed to help keep teens safe on Instagram by limiting unwanted contact, showing age-appropriate content, and helping teens manage their time on the social channel. These accounts are reserved for teens ages 13-17, and all pre-existing accounts for teens have been automatically updated with these safety features. However, even with these new safety measures in place, Instagram can still be a double-edged sword for young adults, potentially monopolizing hours of their time and contributing to comparison culture and body image issues.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few ways parents and caregivers can support healthy Instagram use for their teens:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1766\"><strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1764\"> Account Setup<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"2087\">\n<li data-start=\"1767\" data-end=\"1850\">\n<p data-start=\"1769\" data-end=\"1850\">Help your teen <strong data-start=\"1784\" data-end=\"1819\">set up their Instagram account<\/strong>, discussing the importance of privacy options. Messages and follow requests should only be accepted from people they know in real life.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1851\" data-end=\"1966\">\n<p data-start=\"1853\" data-end=\"1966\">Check that the <strong data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"1898\">\u201cTeen Account\u201d protections<\/strong> are active (auto-private, restricted messaging, content filters).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"2087\">\n<p data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2087\">Consider connecting through <strong data-start=\"1997\" data-end=\"2026\">Instagram\u2019s Family Center<\/strong>, which allows parental oversight while respecting privacy.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2117\"><strong data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2115\">Open Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2397\">\n<li data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2199\">\n<p data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2199\">Ask <em data-start=\"2124\" data-end=\"2130\">what<\/em> your teen likes about Instagram \u2014 not just <em data-start=\"2174\" data-end=\"2184\">how much<\/em> they use it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2200\" data-end=\"2300\">\n<p data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2300\">Talk about <strong data-start=\"2213\" data-end=\"2249\">online comparison and body image<\/strong>; remind them that most posts are filtered highlights, not everyday life.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2397\">\n<p data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2397\">Make social media check-ins part of regular conversation, not a punishment or interrogation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2431\"><strong data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2429\">Monitoring &amp; Boundaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2723\">\n<li data-start=\"2432\" data-end=\"2511\">\n<p data-start=\"2434\" data-end=\"2511\">Set <strong data-start=\"2438\" data-end=\"2460\">screen-time limits<\/strong> together instead of enforcing them unilaterally.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2512\" data-end=\"2567\">\n<p data-start=\"2514\" data-end=\"2567\">Periodically discuss who your teen follows and why.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2629\">\n<p data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2629\">Encourage use of \u201c<strong data-start=\"2588\" data-end=\"2605\">Close Friends<\/strong>\u201d for private sharing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2630\" data-end=\"2723\">\n<p data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2723\">Know the signs of trouble, like withdrawal, irritability, obsessing over likes, or hiding screens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2754\"><strong data-start=\"2725\" data-end=\"2752\">Modeling Healthy Use<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2962\">\n<li data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2837\">\n<p data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2837\">Be mindful of your own posting and scrolling habits \u2014 kids learn from example.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2838\" data-end=\"2874\">\n<p data-start=\"2840\" data-end=\"2874\">Take digital breaks or &#8220;digital detox days,&#8221; where no one in the family uses a smartphone or device for a full 24 hours.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"2962\">\n<p data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"2962\">Praise creative or positive online engagement instead of just limiting screen time.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bottom line: Instagram can be an empowering digital playground for teens\u2014a space for creativity, connection, and even learning. The key is <strong data-start=\"3655\" data-end=\"3711\">intentional use, honest communication, and awareness<\/strong> from both sides.
