Do you ever hear the phrase \u201cwrite that down\u201d or \u201cpencil it in?\u201d Those common phrases refer to the link between writing and retaining information. In this blog, we\u2019ll look at the positive effects that writing with a pencil can have on kids\u2019 learning and ultimately provide them with the confidence they need to empower them in the future.<\/p>\n

Studies have shown that handwriting, which involves precise hand movements and sensory engagement, can contribute to the brain\u2019s connectivity patterns, which boost learning and memory. That means when kids write things down, they are more likely to remember what they learned. Retention is likely to be higher than if they type it on a keyboard.<\/p>\n

There is no replacement for a classic Ticonderoga #2 pencil when learning to write the alphabet. Physically writing the alphabet helps students with letter recognition. When children learn to read and write using a computer, they may get confused with certain letters that appear similar because they have not practiced writing those letters.<\/p>\n

Using a pencil also allows kids the ability to erase. Editing and revising are fundamental aspects of learning. Everyone learns from mistakes, and using a pencil provides kids with an opportunity to make adjustments and turn in their best work.<\/p>\n

Writing with a pencil is also beneficial for students when working on math problems. Having a pencil and paper allows them to keep relative numbers and prior calculations close at hand so that they can focus their attention on mathematical strategies and their relationships.<\/p>\n

According to a recent Kids In Need Foundation Impact Survey, pencils are the classroom supply most requested by teachers. Many of their students do not arrive at school with the school supplies they need and may not have access to them at home. Using pencils is vital to the quality of kids\u2019 education, so it\u2019s important that they have the resources they need.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what one teacher had to say to Kids In Need Foundation: \u201cIn the age of digital convenience, physical writing is neglected. Pencils are an accessible and universal tool for communication and the symbol of education. This is why pencils are important to me and my students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The benefits of writing with a pencil are clear, and we believe all kids should have access to pencils in the classroom. That\u2019s why each year, Dixon Ticonderoga donates up to 2 million pencils to the Kids In Need Foundation. For every use of the hashtag #postforpencils during March 16-30, Dixon Ticonderoga donates one package of pencils to a child in need.
