June 11, 2020

For parents, the timing of tax-free weekends make them the perfect opportunity to save some cash on school supplies. If you’re in a state that has a tax-free weekend each year, now’s the time to be on the lookout for both the date and the types of savings you can enjoy.

Here are the 17 states that participated in tax-free weekends2019: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Click on your state within this list from the Balance for the most up-to-date information about their anticipated date for 2020.

If you live in a participating state, you can save considerably, depending on what you’re hoping to buy. Some states, like Connecticut, limit the savings to specific items like footwear and clothing. In others, like Massachusetts, the tax-free weekend might be the perfect time to make a larger purchase like a printer for your home or classroom, since most purchases under $2,500 are eligible there.

Just be sure to read the fine print—many of these states do specify that school supplies are eligible, but not all. Also keep in mind that you don’t have to live in a state to take advantage of sales. If you happen to border a tax-free-weekend state, you can enjoy that state’s discounts, too. (Not ready yet to face possibly crowded shopping situations? Plan ahead and order for curbside pickup.)

Most large retailers will also be participating, which means you can shop online tax free if you live in a state with a tax-free weekend. Not only will you have the convenience of shopping your supply lists from trusted retailers including Target, Amazon, Walmart, and more, right from your phone—you’ll save money!

Something else to consider—following the hardships many communities have had due to the coronavirus pandemic, many schools and students could be without necessary school supplies at back to school. Donation Supply Lists offer an easy and heartfelt way to contribute to schools and students in need. While you’re shopping your child’s list on your tax-free weekend, you can also seamlessly purchase items to donate to your neighborhood school. Read more about TeacherLists’ Donation Supply Lists.
