Tips for Building the Best Back-to-School Supply List

Whether you’re a first-year educator or a seasoned pro, refining your supply list now can save time, reduce stress, and ensure your students have everything they need to succeed when they start the new school year. Here are some smart tips to help you build your best back-to-school supply list for the upcoming year:

1. Reflect on what worked (and what didn’t)

Start by reviewing this year’s classroom needs. Which supplies ran out too quickly? What sat untouched in a cabinet? Use this reflection to fine-tune your list and avoid over- or under-stocking.

2. Review your curriculum needs

Note the supplies you’ll need for specific lessons and projects you’re planning for the upcoming year.

3. Request quality over quantity—94% of families are likely to purchase the brands you request.

If there’s a specific school supply brand you prefer, most families will trust that recommendation. Opt for durable supplies for items like binders, calculators, and notebooks—Case-it, Casio and Five Star make great products that last all year. Don’t forget to specify age-appropriate supplies as well—items like scissors should be purchased in the appropriate size for each student.

4. Account for Student Needs

Be ready for students who may come without supplies. Stock a small “extras” bin with basics—pencils, folders, notebooks—so every student is equipped from day one.

5. Consider individual vs. communal supplies

Consider which supplies should be communal (e.g. tissues, markers, glue) and communicate that to families. Have families label any supplies that are not communal (e.g. headphones, writing journals, etc.).

6. Go digital with your lists

Today, most families expect information to be available online. When you post and share your school supply lists on TeacherLists, you’re offering a huge convenience to families. Not only can lists be viewed online, they can also be purchased at top retailers with just a click—and parents don’t have to worry about keeping track of paper lists.

7. Collaborate with colleagues

Coordinate with your grade-level or department team to share ideas and create grade-wide lists. Better yet, ask your school secretary or PTO/PTA to see if they manage school supply lists at the school or district level. List scan be shared easily on school websites or social media with ready-made banners and GIFs.

8. Don’t forget tech accessories

With technology playing a big role in education, include items like headphones, USB drives, or laptop chargers if needed.

9. Post lists early to help families save money

Back-to-school sales begin early, and more and more families are shopping throughout the summer to save money. Posting lists in advance helps families find better prices and avoid last-minute stress.

By planning thoughtfully and staying organized, you can make back-to-school supply shopping quick, efficient, and even enjoyable for families. A well-prepared student is a confident student, ready to take on the new school year.

From now through June 30, you can enter to win over 20 different classroom supplies when you post your list and add trusted brands! Check out the We Love Teacher Sweepstakes going on now.
